The London Latin American Film Festival, winner of the Express News Excelencia Latina Award 2005, presents 10 days of the most vital and innovative filmmaking from the New World and the Latin Diaspora.
The most vibrant film festival of the year, is taking place at the Riverside Studios Cinema, Bolivar Hall, Duke of York’s Picturehouse cinema in Brighton, Haringey Independent Cimema, Dulwich Paradiso Film Society and Cafe Crema from the 6th to the 15th November 2009; bringing together the best and freshest of contemporary Latin American cinema with an exciting line up of films.
“Bella” the magical, international hit feature, about a football star and a beautiful waitress struggling to control their destinies, receives its British debut at the Festival this year and we are also very excited to announce that the prodigiously talented Eric Manuel Corvalán, will be here to present his marvellous documentary “Raza”, which dares to tackle, head on, the discrimination still faced by African-Cubans, 50 years on from the Revolution.
One of the coolest feature films on the bill has to be “Crossing” with its witty, elliptical take on the theme of belonging, an eclectic soundtrack and brilliant cinematography.
Amongst the outstanding selection of feature documentaries on offer at the 19th London Latin American Film festival, “The Gift of the Pachamama”, is a must see, celebrating the abiding reverence for Mother Nature and the splendours of the Andean landscape which touch the deepest soul of Latin America. Equally unmissable is the stunning, multiple award winning “Children of the Amazon” in which Brazilian filmmaker Denise Zmekhol takes us into the heart of the rain forest, following in the footsteps of the late Chico Mendes (activist and champion of the indigenous peoples).
Following the tradition of showcasing the very best in Cuban cinema, the Festival, this year is proud to present “Sons of Cuba” a fascinating and unflinchingly vivid insight into the rigorous lives led by the young men (predominantly poor and black) training for Cuba’s national boxing squad.
Also essential viewing is the short documentary “Santiago tiene una Pena”, a feast of sound and image as the filmmakers follow 3 young buskers making ends meet on the buses and trains of Santiago de Chile.
You will also find, scattered like pearls through the programme, the best and most exquisite short dramas, arty animations and documentaries.
Highlights include “Escorbo”, an achingly funny and brilliantly choreographed dance between characters and camera and “Quiroga”, a lyrical and sonorous gem of social realist filmmaking.
Do not miss “My Footsteps in Baragua”, a unique insight into the lives of ethnic minority communities in Cuba and “The Sea”, a small, poignant masterpiece in which a boy, accompanied by his pet goldfish, travels all day to receive his birthday present; a visit to the sea.
If you catch all of these, you will but have scratched the surface of what is on offer. The strength, in depth, of the Festival this year is unsurpassed.
As ever, a fierce vortex of social and cultural activity surrounds the Festival, bringing creative fire to chilly November. Canning House will see the opening of a major photographic exhibition by Julio Ectchart, with the chance to invest in one of his prints at an auction! The prestigious Vibe Bar is the venue for, not only a wide ranging exhibition of Latin Art, but also for the unmissable LAFF Closing Night Party.

Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre
El Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre, ideado por Humberto Solás a finales del año 2000, mientras se grababan en Gibara escenas del primer filme realizado en vídeo digital en Cuba (Miel para Oshún) y cuya primera edición se inauguró en la tercera semana de abril de 2003, se consolidó bajo el continuo diseño tanto artístico como conceptual de Humberto; alcanzando su madurez y dimensión actual durante la quinta y la sexta ediciones de 2007 y 2008.
El triste imponderable de su ausencia, ocurre en la plenitud de sus facultades creativas, mientras avanzan los preparativos para la séptima edición del certamen y ante la inminencia de inaugurar la 1ra Muestra Temática del Cine Pobre en noviembre en la ciudad de Cienfuegos.
Orgullosos estamos los que pudimos acompañarlo a emprender este sueño y el de sus dos filmes más recientes, Miel para Oshún (2001) y Barrio Cuba (2005), realizados ambos con moderados presupuestos económicos.
Humberto libró una batalla campal por la reanimación del cine de autor, predicando con el ejemplo en sus dos últimos filmes. Así cerró su carrera el autor que legó al Cine Cubano algunos de los más caros y fastuosos clásicos cinematográficos (Lucía, 1968; Cecilia, 1982; El Siglo de las Luces, 1990).
El Festival, conocido para muchos como “El Cine Pobre de Humberto Solás”, continuará el enorme desafío ético de Humberto de consolidar, con una visión igualmente pragmática, múltiples espacios profesionales cinematográficos de rigor artístico en Cuba y el extranjero. A partir de este momento se nombrará “Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre de Humberto Solás”.

Primera Muestra Temática del Cine Pobre
Dedican muestra de Cine Pobre a la memoria del realizador Humberto Solás
La Habana, 26 sep (EFE).- La Primera Muestra Temática del Cine Pobre se celebrará del 20 al 23 de noviembre próximos, dedicada al realizador cubano Humberto Solás, recientemente fallecido y fundador de ese festival, dirigido a estimular la producción de obras audiovisuales alternativas, informaron hoy sus organizadores.
La muestra rendirá un homenaje especial a Solás (1941-2008), quien fuera el fundador y presidente del Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre, que ha celebrado seis ediciones en la ciudad oriental de Gibara, de acuerdo con un comunicado divulgado por el director del certamen, Sergio Benvenuto.
El VII Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre se celebrará del 13 al 19 de abril de 2009 en su sede habitual, la localidad oriental de Gibara, en la provincia oriental de Holguín y uno de los municipios más afectadas por el paso devastador del huracán "Ike" a principios de septiembre.
Sus organizadores decidieron darle el nombre de Humberto Solás al festival.
Durante la muestra se proyectarán y someterán a debate las obras premiadas en la VI edición del Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre (abril 2008), certamen creado por el director, una de las figuras más importantes del cine cubano.
Los organizadores señalaron que se han propuesto "la compleja tarea de debatir, polemizar, sugerir y estimular" una incidencia cualitativa superior en el adecuado tratamiento de temas como la igualdad de oportunidades de la mujer, diversidad sexual, el VIH-sida, el machismo, la violencia en el cine y el audiovisual contemporáneo.
También han convocado para la cita un Taller de Creación de Guiones para Obras Audiovisuales de corta duración con temática de Género para desarrollar cinco proyectos audiovisuales que serán propuestos en diferentes espacios para obtener el apoyo financiero que permita concretarlos.
